Arizona Motorcycle Lighting Laws

Hello Members,

Lighting laws for vehicles vary from state to state. Local law enforcement agencies enforce these laws to ensure safety for all drivers on the roadway. Motorcycle lighting is much the same when compared to a standard motor vehicle. However, Arizona law lists a few variations only applicable to motorcycles.

Head Lamps: A motorcycle in Arizona must have at least one headlight, but is permitted to have as many as two. State law does not allow for more than two head lamps for lighting purposes. The head lamps must be located on the cycle at a height between 22-inches to 54inches above the ground. The lights can only emit a white or amber color.

Tail Lamps: All vehicles in Arizona must have at least one tail lamp that illuminates the license plate. One or more tail lamps are permitted on a motorcycle. A tail lamp must give off light at a distance of at least 50 feet from the rear of the cycle. The light must also be positioned on the motorcycle at a height between 15-inches to 72-inches from the ground.

Stop Lights: A rear light used to indicate a stopping motor vehicle is required on all vehicles in the state. These are called stop lamps. A stop lamp must be different and clearly visible from the signal lights on a motorcycle. The height requirements follow the same rules as a tail lamp, which must be positioned between 15-inches to 72-inches from the ground. A stop light must be visible to all drivers at least 500 feet from the motorcycle's rear and emit a red color.
