| Shipyard base jumper who parachuted 350ft off crane faces police probe Posted: 30 Jan 2014 02:34 AM PST Shipyard base jumper who parachuted 350ft off crane faces police probe /> Belgian daredevil Cedric Dumont jumped from the Samsom crane, with permission, in 2006 By Rebecca Black – 03 January 2014 A man who completed a death-defying base jump off one of Belfast's most famous landmarks is being investigated.The former shipyard worker leapt off the 109-metre (348 feet) Samson crane at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. He is believed to have freefallen for a short time after jumping before opening his parachute and landing safely on the ground. The daredevil, who is from England, was apprehended by security on the Harland & Wolff site. He is not believed to have had a camera and it is not known if any other people were involved in filming the stunt. It is understood that he had access to the site through his work as a contractor, but the New Year's Eve base jumper broke a lock to gain access to the huge crane and used the staircase to get to the top. A spokesman for Harland & Wolff told the Belfast Telegraph that the worker's employment had now been terminated. "Harland & Wolff can confirm that an unauthorised incident took place on January 1, 2014 involving a contractor employed by our client," he said. "The client has informed us they have dismissed the individual. "As the matter is currently under investigation by H&W and our client, it would be inappropriate to comment further." A spokeswoman for the Harbour Police confirmed officers had attended the scene, but said no arrests had been made. The PSNI said it had been made aware of what happened. Samson is the larger of the two giant yellow cranes which dominate the Belfast skyline. It is 109 metres compared to Goliath, which is 96 metres (315 feet). The cranes were built in 1976 and 1969 respectively. In 2003 the cranes were listed as historic monuments. Base jumping – standing for the four categories of fixed objects that can be jumped from, building, antenna, span and earth – has been an extreme sport since 1978, where participants jump from heights, freefalling for seconds before using a parachute to break their fall. Belgian man Cedric Dumont previously completely a base jump from the Samson crane during 2006 which, he said, took him around three seconds to complete. | ||||||||

Adventures — is offering women-only lessons. By Brennan Smith | The Salt Lake Tribune First Published Jan 06 2014 06:55 am • Last Updated Jan 09 2014 07:06 pm Steph Davis' daily routine is rare, to say the least. Her office is the stunning desert of Moab, and she's most likely to be found plummeting off a towering rock formation with only a parachute and her expertise standing between her and the ground. "Yeah, I mean, when you live in Moab, there's cliffs all around us," Davis says matter-of-factly. "It's pretty normal to do a jump every day or every other day at least." BASE jumping Participants leap from a fixed object, like buildings, bridges and cliffs, then enjoy the fall before deploying their parachute. Steph Davis said Moab's B.A.S.E. Adventures requires 100 skydiving jumps but recommends 200 to 1,000 skydives before taking the intro to BASE jumping class. For information on Moab B.A.S.E. Davis is also a pioneer of women's BASE jumping, offering classes and training specific to female jumpers who often are brought into the BASE jumping world by male partners. "I just wanted to create an opportunity for women to take control of their own BASE career," Davis said. "To say, 'I'm not dependent on this boyfriend or husband or whatever to be my teacher. I can go get my own skills and be an independent jumper.'" BASE jumping isn't a one-size-fits-all sport, with varying styles, techniques and approaches, Davis said. "I see women being really more meticulous and detail-oriented, generally speaking," she said. "[They're] very concerned about doing things correctly as opposed to 'let's just get off this thing.'" The minimum training prerequisite for BASE jumping is 100 skydiving jumps. After that, Davis offers a women's first-jump course at the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho, and a follow-up two-day class in Moab for first cliff jumping after her students are more seasoned. She also offers BASE guiding and tower BASE jumps for experienced jumpers, as well as rock and tower climbing. The Aurdal mayor wants the sport banned locally and national regulations to be drawn up after three men died BASE jumping in Gudvangen last autumn. BASE jumping has been held at Gudvangen for 16 years as part of Ekstremsportveko, the world's largest annual extreme sport and music festival based in Voss. Festival organizers applied to ferry 30 competitors by helicopter to jump points in Gudvangen during festival in late June. Mayor Noralv Distad leads both the Aurland council and Nærøyfjorden conservation board, which will decide the competition's fate. "The development of this sport in recent years has been negative," Distad told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). "There have been several accidents, and we are anxious about its development and very wary of increasing activity with BASE jumping and similar activities." Ekstremsportveko's Pernille Olafsen said a broken foot was the worst accident the BASE jumping event has seen in 16 years. "It's a fantastic tradition which will be cancelled, and not least marketing for Voss and the western region, which would come to an end," she said. "I understand they're concerned, but I think a 'no' won't stop BASE jumpers from doing their sport. I think it would be difficult to enforce a ban." Distad said he doesn't want the sport promoted in Aurland, and noted the area can attract many tourists without marketing BASE jumping. He said recent deaths had major consequences for the environment and rescue workers. | Speech Recognition Feature in Chrome Exploited by Spies Posted: 30 Jan 2014 01:49 AM PST Cyber attackers have found a way to use the speech recognition feature in Chrome to spy on ordinary users of the worldwide web. They managed to switch on a microphone using bugs in the Google Chrome browser. The exploit was discovered by one of the developers, who found it when working on a popular JavaScript Speech Recognition library. This allowed the developer to find many bugs in the browser and to come up with an exploit which combines all.  The developer was quick to report the exploit to Google's security team in private back in September 2013. In less than a week, Google's engineers have found the bugs, suggested fixes, and in the next five days a patch was ready. By the way, the developer's find was nominated for Chromium's Reward Panel. The strange thing was that as time passed, the fix wasn't released. When asked why, Google's team answered that there was an ongoing discussion within the Standards group, to agree on the best course of action. In other words, the company couldn't decide what to do, though there were not many options. It's 2014 already, but Google is still waiting for the Standards group to agree on the correct behavior, while leaving Chrome browser vulnerable. Indeed, all it takes is a user to visit a website exploiting speech recognition to offer some interesting new functionality. | ||||||||

Il s'est ensuite dirigé vers le sud de la ville pour longer Ipanema, Copacabana et le célèbre Pain de Sucre, avant d'ouvrir son parachute et de se poser sans encombre sur la plage devant l'hôtel Copacabana Palace.L'exploit a duré au total 11 minutes et 35 secondes, à une altitude moyenne de 1200 mètres, sans que l'on note le moindre problème avant, durant ou après le vol. L'histoire ne dit pas si Jetman écoutait du Chico Buarque alors qu'il effectuait son petit tour dans les airs. Le vol commence par un saut depuis un hélicoptère, puis Alexander atteint la vitesse de 250 km/h, tout en suivant une trajectoire précise pour s'approcher de l'ouverture de la grotte. Ensuite, il s'engage à toute vitesse vers ce trou pas franchement très large.*Ce vol extraordinaire dépasse le niveau d'engagement de la plupart des sauts réalisés jusqu'alors. La seule option est un succès.
