| Speedflying Video: Speedflyers in dramatic mid-air collision Posted: 26 Apr 2016 01:21 AM PDT Speedflyers in dramatic mid-air collision A dramatic video has emerged of two speedflyers colliding mid-air near Kazanluk, Bulgaria. The footage, shot last week by one of the speedflyers, shows the moment when after a manoeuvre her canopy got caught in the other speedflyer's feet. According to her boyfriend, a more experienced flyer, she did not make sure she had clear airspace before starting manoeuvres which resulted in the collision. The flyers were not injured in the incident. By: Alicia Turner April 5, 2016 - 6:27 pm METCALF, Ga. -- A 911 call is giving us more insight into what happened the night 37-year-old Brandon Jackson BASE jumped off a TV tower and died. Dispatcher: "Are you with him?" Daisher: "We're trying to find him, we were with him earlier and now we're looking for him," It was a search that ended in tragedy. Miles Daisher and Tom Baker searched for nearly an hour for their friend before calling for help. Here's how they describe the last thing they heard. Daisher: "We heard his parachute open and then I don't know, we heard this noise it was like, and it's dark, and we're like you know, we're unable to find him." The 911 call from Thomas County is nearly 15 minutes long. Throughout it Daisher remains calm, but noticeably worried. Daisher: "We've been walking around and trying to reach him on the radio, and find anything down here. I don't know what happened," Based on law enforcement's timeline, Jackson started climbing the tower shortly after the three arrived around midnight. The tape reveals they were communicating by radio. Although they don't admit trespassing, they do admit to having no affiliation with the tower company. Dispatcher: "You're not with WTLH correct?" Daisher: "No, no ma'am." Dispatcher: "You were just out there parachuting?" Daisher: "Yes." Even once Daisher knew authorities were on the way, he still wanted to help. Daisher: "I was just wondering if you guys had an estimated time, because I'd like to go still kind of look for him if I could. I'd just like to keep looking, you know?" Dispatcher: "I understand." Jackson's body was found six hours later. Daisher and Baker were arrested that day and charged with trespassing. Both bonded out of jail a short time later. The Thomas County Sheirff's Office says it will be up to the District Attorney's Office to decide whether or not the pair will should face additional charges. |

Now imagine just taking a leap off that cliff, with nothing but the earth thousands of feet below you. It's that thrill that attracted BASE jumpers to Unaweep Canyon, Tuesday night. However one jump went wrong, leaving a man injured and needing to be rescued from the canyon bottom. "They said he had one 400 jumps and this was the one that went wrong," explained Doug Sieckert, who was responding to the scene with Mesa County Search and Rescue on Tuesday night. It's something every athlete fears, the worst case scenario. Sieckert said they were dispatched to the scene, thinking they were aiding a possible fallen hiker. Instead of a hiker, they found a BASE jumper, who had fallen to the canyon floor. The Mesa County Search and Rescue team said it took them about three hours to rescue the BASE jumper on Tuesday, due to tough terrain in the canyon. "His parachute deployed, but it did a 180 and sent him into the cliff," Sieckert said. "So he fell about 100 feet." That's the biggest danger of BASE jumping, according to Dylan Hazelhurst who knows the thrill of free falling. "In skydiving we are jumping from 10,000 feet on up, and that's above the ground," Hazelhurst explained, who works for Jump Junction. "So we have 60 seconds of free fall time. In BASE jumping you have seconds. If a malfunction happens while BASE jumping, as soon as that happens you're basically already hitting the ground." BASE jumpers have only a parachute to rely on, making it critical to know your gear. It's an extreme sport that is coming to gain popularity, but experts said those wishing to partake in it, need extensive training. "It doesn't matter what you see on TV, you still need to take the steps to use it and do it the right way," Hazelhurst said. |
